Wiltshire Past Captains
at Maidenhead GC
18th July 2024

Result:  Wiltshire won 5-3

On the warmest day of the year, on a golf course in great condition, we played a very experienced side from Wiltshire, many of whom had never played the lush fairways and the superb greens of Maidenhead GC. Therefore, it was of some surprise that Berkshire narrowly lost 5-3.
Our Captain 2024, Jim, continued his fine winning partnership form with Brian Aldridge, resulting in 3+2 win. Followed by our President, Clem, and partner Geoff Morris also winning 3+2, giving Berkshire an early 2 up lead.

However, Wiltshire had other ideas winning the next 4 matches on the trot, leaving the last 2 matches to fight over their points. What a finish by the last 2 pairings, Glynn Duff and Steve Warren, never up in the match, halved the 18th for a valuable half point. Our last pairing, of Paul Gold and the “evergreen” David Wylie, gained a precious half point after being 3 down with 3 to play. David winning 16+17 and last year’s Captain, Paul Gold, winning the 18th for a great memorable comeback. Making it a close respectable defeat of 5-3.
After a very hot round, we all enjoyed a well-earned cold drink, followed by a lovely dinner, speeches and reluctantly handing back, again, the trophy to Wiltshire.

Our thanks to John Quimby, our “stand-in match Secretary“, for welcoming the Wiltshire team, attending the start of the matches, marking up all the cards and announcing the pairings. A great day on a great course.
